Bamberg: Fairy-Tale Vibes and Riverwalks

If you're looking for a town that feels like it stepped straight out of a storybook and plopped itself next to a peaceful river, let me introduce you to the charming Franconian city of Bamberg.

Where We Stayed: Right on the Regnitz River

We loved our stay at Tandem Hotel, which is tucked right along the river and walking distance to everything there is to explore around the city. This wonderful family owned B&B offered a wonderful breakfast which included homemade pastries, bread, cheese and meat trays and delicious coffee. The service was wonderful.

Things to Explore

Bamberg Cathedral (Bamberger Dom):

It’s massive, it’s ancient, and it’s got that dark, Gothic grandeur that makes you whisper even when you’re outside. Right across from the cathedral is the Residenz which we explored inside and out.

The Rose Garden (Rosengarten):
Next to the Residenz is the Rose Garden, and wow, talk about a view. Roses in full bloom, and a panorama of Bamberg’s red rooftops with church spires poking through. This garden is beautiful and peaceful.

Altes Rathaus (Old Town Hall):
Yes, the famous building that literally sits in the middle of the river. This whimsical structure looks like something from a fantasy novel.

Little Venice (Klein Venedig):
The walk along the canal is charming, with boats and pastel colored houses, this was a great stroll in the afternoon.

Nuremberg Day Trip

We hopped on a train and zipped over to Nuremberg—just under an hour away. The train was quick, easy, and comfy. In Nuremberg, we explored the old town, saw the massive castle, and tried some Nürnberger sausages and lebkuchen (German Gingerbread Cookies).

Final Thoughts

Three nights felt just right. Bamberg is one of those cities that somehow dodges the big tourist crowds but delivers all the charm, architecture, and atmosphere of Europe’s greatest hits. Between the river walks, historical landmarks, and great food, I fell a little in love with this place.
