A Day Trip to Nuremberg
A Medieval Fairytale Land
We took a day trip from Bamberg to Nuremberg by train, which only took about an hour—and it was so worth it.
Nuremberg felt like stepping back in time. As we walked through the ancient city walls to enter the town, it truly felt like we were entering a different world. The city is steeped in history, known for its medieval charm, winding cobblestone streets, and a dramatic past—from imperial glory to World War II scars.
A City Rich in History
Nuremberg is packed with historical landmarks: from its beautiful Imperial Castle, to the underground dungeons, and the Nazi Rally Party Grounds—a reminder of a much darker time. The city also played a pivotal role in post-war justice as the site of the Nuremberg Trials, where surviving Nazi leaders were prosecuted.
Despite its heavy historical significance, the city feels vibrant, colorful, and alive.
Must try Eats in Nuremberg
Of course, no trip is complete without trying the local specialties. Some must-try foods include:
Nürnberger Rostbratwurst:
Small, thin sausages full of flavor—usually served with sauerkraut or in a crusty bun. A classic!Lebkuchen (Gingerbread):
A traditional Nuremberg treat, especially around Christmas. We went to the famous Schmidt Bakery to try it, and it was nothing short of amazing—spiced, sweet, and absolutely delicious.
Bridges, Markets & Old Town Charm
One of my favorite things about walking through Nuremberg was discovering all the beautiful bridges that connect different parts of the city. Each one offers a new perspective and a picture-perfect view of the town.
In the Old Town center, you'll find the impressive Frauenkirche (Church of Our Lady) and the Schöner Brunnen (Beautiful Fountain). The square is full of life, with food stalls and local goods—and during the holidays, it transforms into one of Germany’s most famous Christmas markets.
Weißgerbergasse – A Hidden Gem
Don't miss Weißgerbergasse, a cobblestone street lined with colorful, half-timbered houses. It’s one of the most preserved medieval streets in the city and hands-down one of my favorite areas. The whole street feels warm, inviting, and peacefully tucked away from the busier parts of town.
Nuremberg Imperial Castle – A Step Into the Past
We took a self-guided tour through the Nuremberg Imperial Castle (Kaiserburg Nürnberg) and it was a highlight of the day. This hilltop fortress once served the kings and emperors of the Holy Roman Empire between the 11th and 16th centuries.
The castle itself is a blend of Romanesque and Gothic architecture, offering stunning views over the city. One of the coolest parts? The medieval arms and armor museum inside the castle—full of swords, shields, and centuries-old weaponry that really bring the era to life.
Nuremberg truly felt like a fairytale come to life—rich with history, stunning medieval architecture, and vibrant cultural experiences. Whether you’re exploring ancient castles, wandering cobblestone streets, or just enjoying a bratwurst in the market square, this city has a little magic around every corner.
If you're planning a trip to Bavaria, make sure Nuremberg is on your list. It's perfect for a day trip, but you’ll probably find yourself wishing for more time, just like we did.
