Munich, Germany

In August 2024, we took a 10-day adventure through Germany, exploring the beautiful Bavaria region. We kicked things off in Munich, where we spent 3 nights, including a day trip to the charming town of Regensburg.

When I hopped off the train and rode up the escalator at Munich’s main station, I had no idea what to expect. But stepping out into the city felt like stepping right into a postcard. The first thing I spotted was Marienplatz, the lively square at the heart of the city. The towering New Town Hall (Neues Rathaus) was pretty impressive, with its intricate architecture making me feel like I was in a fairy tale. Walking around Munich is like strolling through history, with the perfect mix of old-world charm and modern vibes.

Where we stayed:

We stayed at the DO & CO Hotel München, a stylish boutique hotel just steps from Marienplatz in the heart of Munich. The location couldn’t have been better for exploring the city. The rooms were spacious, modern, and very comfortable — and yes, for anyone wondering, they’re air-conditioned! Service was truly outstanding, with friendly staff who made us feel welcome from the moment we arrived. A great blend of comfort, convenience, and thoughtful touches.

Food: A Dream Come True for Foodies

As a self-proclaimed foodie, I was in heaven. Munich’s food scene? Absolutely on point. Everywhere you turn, there’s a cozy café with the most delicious coffee (yes, I drank way too many cups). And don’t get me started on the pastries and bread. Whether it was pistachio croissants, buttery pretzels, or just some freshly baked bread — it was all so good, you really can't go wrong with anything.

We kicked off our trip with a classic Bavarian breakfast. We’d just arrived and had a few hours to kill before checking into our hotel, so we popped into a local spot for some Weißwurst (mild veal sausage) and a perfectly soft pretzel. A solid breakfast choice, right? We also had Kaiserschmarrn, a fluffy, torn pancake dish that’s totally addicting (and totally traditional in Bavaria and Austria). If you’ve never tried it, trust me, you’re missing out.

Now, Munich is the place to embrace the beer culture. Whether you’re sitting in the iconic Hofbräuhaus or chilling at a smaller, local beer hall, it’s an experience you don’t want to miss. Munich’s beer is world-famous for a reason, and let’s be real — the best part is that the beer comes in one size: the mass (1 liter). So, you’re definitely not going to go thirsty here!

Cultural Stops: A Perfect Mix of History and Modernity

When I wasn’t eating or sipping on beer, I was soaking up Munich’s incredible cultural sites. The Marienplatz is the beating heart of the city, and right there, you’ll find the Neues Rathaus and its famous Glockenspiel. Every day at 11 a.m., the clock puts on a little performance that’s totally worth sticking around for. It’s quirky, fun, and definitely something to check out.

And then there’s the food market — the Viktualienmarkt — where you can wander through stalls brimming with local products, cheeses, meats, and fresh flowers. It’s like the best kind of sensory overload.

You can’t visit Munich without seeing the Frauenkirche, Munich’s iconic cathedral. Built in 1726, it’s a stunning example of Baroque architecture. Even if you’re not super into cathedrals, this one is worth a look.

One of my favorite stops, though, was the Residenz Munich — an old royal palace and the largest in Germany. Built in 1385, it’s got over 150 rooms, so you can really lose yourself in its grandeur. The palace feels like stepping back in time with all its displays, architecture, and ancient rooms. If you love history and palaces, this one’s a must-see.

A City You’ll Want to Return To:

Munich was everything I hoped for and more — a city that knows how to balance its deep-rooted traditions with a modern, lively atmosphere. The food, the beer, coffee, the rich cultural experiences, and the welcoming locals make it a place I’ll definitely visit again. So whether you’re a history buff, a foodie, or just someone looking to explore a city full of life, Munich should be at the top of your list.
